App Bloat Is Mostly a Myth: What 3.59 Million Shopify Stores Actually Spend
83.3% of Shopify stores spend nothing on apps and the median store runs two. App bloat is real in a narrow cohort at the top, and imaginary everywhere else.

Of 3,593,277 active Shopify stores tracked in May 2026, roughly 2.99 million (83.3%) spend nothing on paid apps, 533,106 (14.8%) spend between $1 and $99 a month, and only 65,441 (1.8%) spend over $100[1].
Just 1,602 stores, 0.04% of the total, spend over $1,000 a month[1].
So the entire "your store is drowning in apps" genre is describing something that happens to about one store in fifty-five. I've written that genre myself, and looking at these numbers I got it wrong.
What the data actually shows
Two independent studies this year, different methods, same conclusion.
Eightx analysed 3.59 million Storeleads-tracked stores and found the distribution above, concluding that the vast majority of Shopify operators aren't drowning in app spend, they're under-spending because they're running small stores on free Shopify-native tooling[1].
StoreInspect analysed 340,557 live Shopify stores in March 2026 using automated headless browsers to detect installed apps directly, rather than inferring from billing. Mean app count: 2.5. Median: 2. 67.7% of stores run between zero and two apps, and only 6.8% run eight or more[2].
One study measured spend, one measured installs. Both landed in the same place.
The finding that inverts the usual advice
Here's where it gets genuinely interesting, and where I'd expect an argument.
StoreInspect found that more apps correlate with higher store quality scores, not lower. Stores running 11 to 15 apps scored 100. Single-app stores averaged 49[2].
And 94% of "bloated" stores, meaning those with eight or more apps, are Shopify Plus merchants[2]. Established businesses with real revenue, not confused beginners who installed forty things.
The obvious objection is that correlation runs backwards here. Successful stores can afford apps, so of course app count tracks success. That's almost certainly a large part of it, and neither study establishes causation.
But it does destroy the naive version of the argument. "You have too many apps, that's why you're slow and unprofitable" is not supported by either dataset. If anything the stores with the most apps are the ones doing best.
Does app bloat affect you?
Almost certainly not, and here's how to check in two minutes.
Open your Shopify billing page. Add up the recurring app charges. Compare against these bands, which come from Eightx's analysis by revenue tier[3].

If you're inside your band, you don't have a bloat problem. You might still have a specific bad app, which is a different and much smaller conversation.
If you're well above your band, look at redundancy before you look at count. StoreInspect found 8.7% of stores (29,602 of them) running duplicate apps in the same category, with the single most common overlap being 5,993 stores running both Klaviyo and Mailchimp for email[2].
That's the real finding for most people. Not too many apps. Two apps doing the same job because nobody cancelled the first one.
What we found: the cost that grows without you doing anything
The genuinely underrated risk in app spend isn't the number of apps. It's that several of them are priced on a metric that grows whether or not you use the product more.
Eightx's analysis points at Klaviyo as the clearest example: revenue per customer rose 29%, from about $5,200 in Q3 2023 to about $6,700 in Q2 2025, driven by profile growth and tier escalation rather than by customers choosing to upgrade[3].
Think about what that means mechanically. Your email list grows because your store is working. Your bill grows with the list. You did not decide anything. Nobody sent you a renewal quote.
This pattern is everywhere once you look. Per-profile pricing, per-session pricing, per-order pricing, GMV percentages. All of them scale with success, and none of them prompt a decision.
The one-sentence test
The most useful heuristic in the Eightx analysis: for any app over $100 a month, write the ROI case in one sentence. Anything you can't finish that sentence on goes on a delete-after-30-days list[3].
A typical audit at the $1M to $5M band recovers $500 to $2,000 a month from apps nobody is using[3]. Above $20M the conversation stops being "cut apps" and becomes "negotiate enterprise contracts"[3].
The four apps most likely to be redundant right now
Rather than telling you to cut apps generally, here are the specific overlaps that show up most often, and what to check before you cancel anything.
Search and filtering
Shopify Search & Discovery is free, handles synonyms, filters, boosts and product recommendations, and includes semantic search on Grow, Advanced and Plus for stores under 200,000 products, though not for the Japanese locale and not for predictive search[4][15].
Before cancelling a paid search app, check two things: whether you're on a plan that gets semantic search, and whether you're hitting the 25-filter ceiling. If you're on Basic, the cheapest upgrade path is often the plan rather than the app.
Tax calculation
Shopify Tax is free on your first $100,000 of global sales a year, then 0.35% per order capped at $0.99 an order and $5,000 a year per region[5]. Plenty of merchants pay for a tax app that does calculation only, which is the part that's now free and capped.
The part that isn't free is filing. If your app is filing returns for you, keep it. If it's calculating rates, check whether you're paying twice.
Automation and workflows
Flow covers a lot of what merchants buy separate automation apps for: tagging, fulfilment holds, low-stock alerts, customer segmentation triggers. It's included and it's underused.
Email and SMS
This is the redundancy that shows up most in the data. 5,993 stores run both Klaviyo and Mailchimp[2]. Almost always this is a half-finished migration that nobody closed out, and it's usually the single largest recoverable line in an audit.
The performance argument, examined properly
The usual claim is that apps slow your site and slow sites convert worse. Both halves need unpicking.
Apps do inject scripts, and scripts do cost you render time. That part is real and measurable. What isn't supported is the leap from "you have twelve apps" to "your site is slow", because a well-built app that loads asynchronously and a badly-built one that blocks rendering are not comparable, and the count doesn't distinguish them.
StoreInspect's data works against the simple version of the claim directly, with high-app-count stores scoring better rather than worse[2].
The honest version of the performance advice is per-script, not per-app.
How to actually check
Open Chrome DevTools, Network tab, filter to JS, sort by size and by blocking time. Then look at the Coverage tab to see how much of each script is actually executed on that page.
What you're looking for is not app count. It's third-party scripts loading synchronously in the head, scripts loading on pages where the app does nothing, and scripts from apps you uninstalled that left their theme code behind.
That third one is the real killer and nobody talks about it. Uninstalling an app does not always remove its theme edits. I've found scripts from apps that were removed two years earlier, still loading on every page view, still costing render time, with nobody paying for them and nobody benefiting.
Search your theme files for the app's name after any uninstall. Every time.
Platform by platform
Shopify
The best app ecosystem and the most exposure to it. Shopify has also absorbed several paid app categories into the platform, which means apps you're paying for may now duplicate something free.
Check these before renewing anything: Search & Discovery covers search, filtering and product recommendations for free, with semantic search included on Grow, Advanced and Plus for stores under 200,000 products[4]. Shopify Tax handles calculation free to $100,000 of global sales and capped at $5,000 a year per region after that[5]. Flow handles a lot of what merchants buy automation apps for.
Also worth remembering the other direction. Shopify retires its own free tools too: Stocky, given away since before May 2020, stops working on 31 August 2026[6]. "It's free from Shopify" is not the same as "it will be there next year."
And the API cadence affects your apps whether you notice or not. Shopify ships a new API version quarterly with a minimum 12 months of support and at least nine months of overlap[7], and every new public app since April 2025 must use GraphQL[8]. An abandoned app on an old API is a failure with a date on it.
WooCommerce
Different shape of problem entirely. Woo plugins are usually a one-off purchase plus an annual renewal for updates and support, so the recurring bill is lower and the abandonment risk is much higher.
The Woo equivalent of app bloat is plugin sprawl with security consequences. An unmaintained plugin isn't just dead weight, it's an attack surface, and unlike a Shopify app it runs on your own server with database access.
The right audit on Woo is different. List every active plugin, check the last update date, check whether the licence is still current, and remove anything not updated in twelve months. That's a security job, not a cost-cutting job, and it matters more.
Woo's own documentation is decent on what's built in, and a fair amount of what merchants buy plugins for is already there in product and inventory settings[9].
Magento and Adobe Commerce
Extensions here are code deployed into your application, not a hosted service calling an API. So the cost isn't the licence, it's the upgrade friction. Every extension is a thing that might break on a platform upgrade, and the more you have, the more expensive every upgrade becomes.
The Magento version of the audit: for each extension, what breaks if we remove it, and who tests it at the next upgrade. Extensions that nobody can answer the second question for are the expensive ones, regardless of licence cost.
A lot of what Magento merchants buy extensions for is native. The Inventory Management module handles multi-source stock with concurrent checkout protection out of the box[10].
BigCommerce
Smaller app ecosystem, which reduces both the choice and the bloat. The costs to watch here are structural rather than app-driven: plan auto-upgrades at $30,000 and $100,000 trailing-twelve-month GMV, a 0.9% GMV overage on Scale above $33,333 a month, and an Open Payment Provider Fee of up to 2.0% for using a non-integrated payment provider[11].
On a BigCommerce store, auditing your payment provider choice is worth more than auditing your apps.
Custom and headless
You don't have apps, you have dependencies, and the same discipline applies with higher stakes. Every package is code you ship, and the audit question is identical: what breaks if this goes, and who patches it when a CVE lands.
The app audit, done properly

What agents do to the app question
One genuinely new consideration, and it points against fragmentation without supporting the old bloat argument.
Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, launched at NRF on 11 January 2026 with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart as co-developers[12], and the Agentic Commerce Protocol maintained by OpenAI and Stripe at spec version 2026-04-17[13], both need one coherent answer per product: available, priced, delivered when, returnable until when.
If your availability lives in one app, your delivery promise in another and your returns policy in a third, nothing in your stack can produce that answer without someone building the join.
Futurum's survey of 830 IT decision-makers found exactly this driving consolidation at enterprise scale: 41% planning to reduce their application count, best-of-breed procurement down to 20.7%, with AI and agentic workflows named as the reason rather than cost-cutting[14].
Note what that argument is and isn't. It's an argument about data coherence, not about app count or page weight. A store with fifteen apps that all read and write the same product record is fine. A store with four apps holding four versions of the truth isn't.
What to do this week
- Total your app spend and compare it to your revenue band. Two minutes, and it probably ends the conversation[3].
- Group by job and look for duplicates. 8.7% of stores run two apps in one category[2].
- List every app priced on something that grows by itself. Profiles, sessions, orders. Those are the bills that surprise you[3].
- Check what's now free natively. Search, tax and automation have all moved in-platform on Shopify[4][5].
- Grep your theme for apps you removed. Leftover scripts are the actual performance problem.
- On Woo, audit for abandoned plugins as a security job. Anything not updated in a year comes out[9].
- Ask whether anything in your stack can answer the four agent questions in one call. That's the fragmentation that will actually cost you[12].
The takeaway
83.3% of Shopify stores spend nothing on apps[1]. The median store runs two[2]. 94% of the stores that do run eight or more are Shopify Plus merchants, and stores with more apps score better, not worse[2].
App bloat is real in a narrow cohort at the top of the market and largely imaginary everywhere else. The content industry built around it, mine included, has been solving a problem that about 1.8% of stores actually have[1].
The two things worth doing are unrelated to count. Cancel the duplicates. Watch the bills that grow on their own.
